Implementation of waste management policies in EaP countries according Association Agreements (Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine)

Purpose

   The project comes to identify the level of implementation of AAs in the field of waste management in the 3 considered countries and involve larger circles of the population to get aware about EaP process, integration of MD, UA and GE in EU and what are the steps to be done according to AAs to improve waste management in these countries, diminish the impact on the environment and the health of the population and bring benefits by transforming the mentality of all the interested stakeholders in seeing waste only as secondary raw materials which could be reused and from which other goods could be produced, working places could be created and only those fractions of waste which are dangerous would reach accordingly arranged landfills (built in conformity with EU standards).

Main activities

In Moldova, following activities are planned:

  • Several surveys to evaluate the situation in the field of waste management (on organization, tariffs, collection, recycling, national policies, local policies, storage) will be developed. More than 200 questionnaires will be disseminated among people from the Ministry of Environment, local authorities, municipal enterprises, civil society, local population, experts and donors, as well as recycling companies;
  • Several info-days will be organized to discuss with the local population, municipal enterprise which collects waste, municipality in Chisinau municipality and Straseni town in order to inform the population about the waste management priorities, recycling possibilities and necessity of separate collection of the waste;
  • One report on the gaps in implementing the AA in relation to waste management will be developed;
  • Developing 1000 posters on waste separate collection and distribution of these posters in the vicinity of apartment block buildings in Chisinau where there are containers for separate collection of different fractions of waste
  • Organization of 1 round table with 30 participants from the Ministry of Environment, Parliament, local authorities, municipal enterprises which collect waste, experts, civil society, enterprises which recycle waste to discuss the report on gaps identified in implementing the AA between MD and EU and the questionnaires collected, presentation of the gap report at the Annual Assembly of the CSF of the EaP
  • Articles about the project issued on a monthly basis and placed on relevant web pages for different target groups including mass media.
